Transalpina cycling route

Transalpina
The Kings road and Strategica

This is the high-altitude proposal for our scenic tours. The route immerges us for 4 days in a truly unspoiled mountain landscape. We will have the chance to ride on the "King's Road"-Transalpina, Romania's highest alpine road, passing on to "Strategica" constantly surrounded by breathtaking landscapes, lakes, waterfalls, and virgin forests.

Transalpina also called "King's Road" located at over 2,000 meters altitude, is the highest road in Romania that can be crossed by car, having the highest point in Urdele Pass (2,145 m). The beginnings of this road are unclear. Some sources claim that it was first built by the Roman legions during the wars with the Dacians, which was recorded in historic maps under the name of "Roman strategic corridor IV". It was rebuilt in the interwar period and put into use in 1938 when it was inaugurated by King Carol II. The road was also rehabilitated during World War II when the Germans needed this access road for military reasons. In the last years, the road has been paved and became a major attraction for bikers and cyclists.

"Strategica" or "The strategic road" is a 45km long unpaved road on a smooth ridge located at 2000 m asl with the Vidra lake and dam at his foot. A true spot of heaven where, in all four cardinal directions, the eyes can't stop wondering the wild, unique and charming landscapes, a truly beautiful, picturesque alpine road. The old military road was developed by the Germans during the First World War (in fact by Erwin Rommel himself in 1916) with a strategic role since the area was close to the border of two provinces: Transylvania and the Romanian province of Muntenia.
